Nearly half of the United States are facing the reality of “Forever Chemicals” contaminating their water supply
According to a recent U.S. Geological survey, nearly half of the U.S. tap water supply is contaminated with PFAS. Deemed one of the most extensive assessments of forever chemicals in U.S. drinking supplies, samples were taken from private and public water supplies in 716 locations nationwide from 2016 – 2021. The researchers were testing for 32 of the 12,000 PFAS compounds, leaving most of America to wonder what else is in my water.
PFAS in Drinking Water
Researchers detected at least one of the chemicals known as PFAS or poly-fluoroalkyl substances in about 45% of U.S. drinking water samples. Scientists have linked the chemicals to a number of health problems including high cholesterol, a decreased immune response to vaccines, and an increased risk of kidney and testicular cancer and thyroid disease. The survey found that exposures to PFAS were more common in areas such as the Eastern Seaboard, Great Plains, Great Lakes, and central and southern California.
In March the EPA proposed the first federal limits on six PFAS compounds in public drinking water and we expect to see more limits put into effect as more is discovered about these PFAS compounds.
